Hot Summer Day

Today as we drove down the freeway I looked out the window to see the heat waves playing along the pavement. The grass was a dull, dead brown color. When I stuck my head out the window it felt like I was putting my head right over a heating vent, sure, it gave me a breeze, but it was hot! The car gave me a muggy sort of feeling, everything felt sticky. The heat was so over-wellming! I was beginning to feel sick when we stopped in the Fred Meyers parking lot. We didn't feel motivated enough to get out of the car so we just sat there for a while. I decided to start people-watching. I saw a little girl complaining as she was practically dragged out of the store by her irritated looking mother. I saw a man with a turban on his head( I found that interesting) There was nothing else to see except for a couple of smokers leaning against the building, making the air around them stiff and polluted.

Earlier that day I went to a friend of mines underground pool. As I took the few steps needed to be taken to get to the pool I noticed how perfectly still and glassy it looked, perfectly transparent. I lightly dipped my foot in and watched as it rippled the surface, making it look more like water. I watched as my friend and her sister do front flips into the pool, making big splashes- every drop of water leaving its own set of ripples on the top of the pool. When my friends came up from the ten foot deep end of the pool laughing with pleasure was when I slowly took the steps into the pool, not quite as sure of myself as they were. The water was so refreshing, it was as if the sun had not made me miserable at all before. I splashed around and dunked a lot. My friends older sister tried to teach my mom how to dive into the pool the right way. Emma was there and we played colors and sharks and minnows. We had a long pole that one of us would sit on and the others would pull us up, it felt so strange to hang by your feet for a while then be plunged into the cold water. When I got out it didn't take long for me to be hot again but the car ride home wasn't nearly as miserable.

Now, I'm sitting here with a fan blowing cool air into my face and blowing my hair out of my face.
